CCR Charity for 2017-2018 - First Nations Youth Projects

During the 2017-18 season, we are supporting Canadian First Nations youth living in very isolated communities with few services. The two programmes we are funding are the following:

1) on a Canada-wide level, the Summer Literacy Camps programme managed by Frontier College, which supports the reading ability of some 8,000 youngsters in 130 isolated communities from B.C. to Labrador and Nunavut

and

2) the local Weeneebayko Area Health Authority and/or the Delaney Youth Centre serving Moose Factory and the coast of James Bay up toward the Manitoba border. These remote communities in the far north need urgent support for their children and young people especially in the area of suicide prevention. They incorporate traditional healing and community-building activities in their approach.

CCR Walks: Whose Past Is It Anyway? Monuments As Weapons - December 3, 2017

Every nation struggles with "Confederate heroes" of its own kind. Rome has had to contend with less-than-exemplary emperors who set up baths, basilicas, and other buildings stamped with their names. Taking a walk through the centre, you're likely to bump into some controversial popes' statues or Mussolini's more recent attempts to place his mark on the city. What does a city or a nation do with these monuments when the bloom is off the rose and history looks at these individuals in a different light? Come wander with us through the centre of Rome as we contemplate the sensitivities surrounding some of these monuments.

When: Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017
Time: 10 a.m.
Meeting point: Near the Ara Pacis; exact location sent to confirmed participants by email.
Cost: €10 for members and €15 for non-members.
RSVP required by Thu. Nov. 30, ATTN Joe at canadarome@gmail.com. You are financially responsible for your reservation.
NB: Please bring correct change.

The Canadian Club of Rome is proud to present a gala evening to celebrate
 C A N A D A   150

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Confederation of Canada and of course we're going to celebrate in style! After enjoying cocktails as we're welcomed into the elegant 17th-century Palazzo Falletti in the historic centre of Rome, we'll be having a formal, full-service dinner. Each table will be doted on by its own waiter in uniform. Excellent Casale del Giglio wines will be served at the table while Around You Banqueting will be providing a delicious meal as well as an Open Bar throughout the evening. A DJ will play relaxing background music during the dinner and rousing dance tunes afterwards so that we can trip the light fantastic! We won't forget our tradition of charity fundraising, either, and our raffle has some truly fantastic prizes, including two Air Canada tickets to any destination, fine wines, and more!

This event has been organized with the generous support of Air Canada.

Warm thanks to Casale del Giglio for their contributions.

CCR Aperitivo Wine Tasting: Focus on Sagrantino - November 14, 2017

Structured, deep coloured and tannic, the unique characteristics of Sagrantino are unlike any other grape variety in Italy. The tasting will focus on this big and bold wine not well known outside of Italy.

The Sagrantino wines for the tasting come from the Leonucci winery, a small producer of high quality wines located on the hillside of the Montignano in the township of Massa Martina. Leonucci’s wine is intimately tied to its ‘terroir’ which has cultivated grapes for centuries.

The tasting will start with a white from Umbria then move into the highly structured Sagrantino. And as a special treat, the restaurant will choose aperitivo foods to match the wines tasted.

Where: Ristorante La Piccola Casa di Bleve, Via Sicilia, 47 (Reservation required through CCR)
When: Tuesday, November 14, 2017
Time: 5:45-7:45 pm. (The tasting will end at 7:45 to allow the restaurant to prepare for dinner service.)
Cost: €20
RSVP to Linda and Paul by Fri. Nov. 10, at canadarome@gmail.com. Please note that you are financially responsible for your reservation.
